How to Get To Castel Sant’Angelo

How to Get to Castel Sant'Angelo Rome

In the right bank of the Tiber River, between Vatican City and Piazza Navona in central Rome, is Castel Sant’Angelo (the former Mausoleum of Hadrian) at Lungotevere Castello 50.

Closest metro stations are on Line A: exit the train at Lepanto or Ottaviano and walk 15-20 minutes in the direction of the signs to the river and Lungotevere Castello. It can be easily walked to the castle by straight Via della Conciliazione fully in the piazza San Pietro, a 1012 minute walk.

Buses are convenient in many cases. Roma Termini, lines 40 and 64, and routes 23, 34, 49, 62, 87, 280, 982 and 990 serve Piazza Pia / Castel Sant’Angelo, only a few minutes walk at the entrance.

Tram 19 can also be used, which stops at Piazza Risorgimento, and after 12 minutes, walk to the river. Mainline trains to Roma San Pietro station deposit you some 20 25 minutes walk away.

When you are already in the historic center, it is always pleasant to walk: starting with Piazza Navona, go along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and cross the famous Ponte Sant’Angelo; or again, starting with Campo de’ Fiori or Trastevere, just go towards the river and the fortress that is evidently visible.

Cabs and rideshares may leave you at Piazza Pia or at the gardens. It is not advisable to drive your own car: the district is located within a central ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone), the traffic is heavy and there is limited parking space, thus the majority of visitors use a public transport or walk to Castel Sant’Angelo.

Useful info

How to get to Castel Sant'Angelo Rome by public transportation?
  • Take Metro line A to Lepanto or Ottaviano. From either station it’s a 15–20 minute walk following signs toward the river and Lungotevere Castello, where Castel Sant’Angelo stands.
  • From Termini or the center, use buses 40, 62, 64, 23, 34, 280, 982, 990 and get off at Piazza Pia/Castel Sant’Angelo or Paola stops, just a few minutes’ walk from the castle.
  • Ride Tram 19 to Piazza Risorgimento. From there, walk about 10–12 minutes down Via Cola di Rienzo and toward the river until you reach Castel Sant’Angelo.
  • Cycle toward the Tiber along riverside paths or bike-friendly streets, then follow Lungotevere Castello. Park and lock your bike near Piazza Pia or the bridges, without blocking pedestrian areas around the castle.
  • From St Peter’s Basilica, walk 10–12 minutes along Via della Conciliazione to the river. From Piazza Navona, stroll 10 minutes toward Ponte Sant’Angelo and cross the bridge straight to the fortress.
  • Drive toward central Rome following signs for San Pietro and the Tiber. Much of the area is ZTL (limited traffic), so you may need to park farther out and walk in.
  • Use paid garages and lots near Prati or along the river, then walk 10–15 minutes to the castle; there’s no large dedicated car park at the monument itself.
  • Central Rome’s ZTL, narrow streets, frequent traffic jams and scarce parking make driving stressful. Metro + bus or a short walk from nearby districts is usually faster, cheaper and simpler.

Best itinerary including a visit to Castel Sant'Angelo Rome

A half-day booked with Tiqets at Castel Sant’Angelo is ideal in the area surrounding the Tiber and Vatican. Begin with a guided tour skip-the-line ticket instead of a simple entrance ticket. The tours of Castel Sant’Angelo that Tiqets offer are generally 1-2 hours long, have a fast-track option, a licensed guide and headsets, and that is why you never spend hours in the ticket line, but instead glide through the castle.

As far as timing is concerned, observe the overall opening hours of 09:00-19:30, Tuesday-Sunday (last entrance at approximately 18.30). Early morning, immediately after opening, or late afternoon to avoid so much light and crowds; both of these times are commonly suggested as the most appropriate times to visit. Budget: 3 hours in total. 1.5-2 hours of the guided visit and additional time to explore the terraces and the rooms of the museum independently.

Arrive on the meeting point on or around Lungotevere Castello / Piazza di Ponte Sant’Angelo 15-20 minutes early on the day. Your Tiqets mobile voucher is scanned on your phone- no printing- then your group goes directly to the fast-track entrance.

An example of a good in-house itinerary is: ramp and courtyards → Hadrians mausoleum remains → papal apartments and lavishly decorated rooms such as Sala Paolina → museum galleries of weapons and sculpture, and then finish on the Terrace of the Angel overlooking St Peters Basilica and Tiber and historic center.

In case you want to add on to the day, Tiqets also offers combo tours, which combine Castel Sant’Angelo with the Pantheon or St Peter Square and you can get 2 key attractions as well as continuous guiding under one booking.
